Andy Seras of Schenectady won a gold medal in Greco- Roman wrestling Thursday at the Pan American Games and 136.5- pounder Isaac "Ike" Anderson of Albany took a silver medal.
Seras defeated Cuba's Cecilio Rodrigues 8-6 in Thursday's final at 149.5 pounds at the U.S. won four of seven bouts against Cuba.
"I really didn't think it would be a high scoring match," Seras said. "I wanted to score early in the match and get established. That's the first time I had the national anthem played for me. It's everything you think it should be."
Anderson lost his his final match by disqualification at 4:53 to Cuba's Juan Maren.
Two other Capital District wrestlers won Greco-Roman bronze medals.
Shawn Sheldon of Albany finished third at 114.5 when he pinned Ulysses Valentin of El Salvador in 4:58. Sheldon was a bronze medalist in the 1987 Pan American Games.
"It was a little bit of a letdown to wrestle for third place," Sheldon said. "I came down here with the idea of winning a gold medal. I'm glad I won the bronze, but it's not the medal I was after."
Frank Famiano of Schenectady took the bronze at 125.5 when he scored a disqualification victory over Juan Cortes of Mexico at 4:20.
