DR. JOBS; CAREER CLINIC.(Features)

Tell me why I must be in early on Monday...

Q I work in human resources and my boss wants us to come in on Easter Monday because of "Red Tape Friday". What is she on about? - Caroline, Linlithgow.

A The Government introduced 73 new pieces of business regulation last Friday. They cover a variety of subjects from the extension of maternity leave from six months to nine months and workers' rights to more flexible hours. With so many new laws to understand and get used to, it will be a hectic time for human resources staff.

Do I need cover letter?

Q I heard that employers don't want covering letters any more as people are just downloading them from the internet and changing a few words. Is this right? - Dave, Prestwick.

A No. You should not download a standard form from the net and change personal details. Cover letters should be tailored to every position you apply for. Keep it short and sweet, try not to repeat yourself and use same tone as the job ad.

Can boss ban skating?

Q My boss is trying to ban me from skateboarding in my spare time because I was off work for eight weeks with a broken ankle. Can he do this? - Robert, Edinburgh.

A Highly unlikely but it depends on the terms of your contract. If it specifically states you are not allowed to take part in extreme sports then he may have a case. Otherwise you are entitled to do whatever you want in your spare time.

Is resigning too risky?

Q I am considering resigning in the hope my boss offers me a pay rise. But if he accepts, I have no other job to go to. Am I doing the right thing? - Doreen, Dunfermline.

A Resigning without having a job offer is a big risk and not one that I would recommend. Your boss may stump up the cash but if not you will be out of pocket. You will be in a much better position to negotiate by lining something else up first.
